This article outlines how Learnosity addresses accessibility standards such as WCAG and regulations such as Section 508, and what documentation we can provide to verify conformance.
In the field of online educational assessment, digital accessibility is not only best practice - it is often a regulatory and contractual requirement for many of our clients. Educational institutions and government agencies, in particular, operate under specific mandates, compliance frameworks, regulations, and procurement rules designed to guarantee equitable access for all learners, with explicit provisions for supporting learners with disabilities.
Learnosity has a deep understanding of these requirements and has built its products to help clients meet their accessibility obligations with confidence.
Anchored in global standards
With the release of the latest version of the WCAG, Learnosity now targets WCAG 2.2 Level AA conformance for its core assessment delivery products. This widely accepted benchmark ensures that our tools are designed and built to be robustly accessible across a broad range of learner needs. It incorporates the latest criteria related to perceivability, operability, understandability, and robustness, with particular emphasis on compatibility with assistive technologies.
Although WCAG 2.2 AA serves as our primary technical benchmark, Learnosity also recognizes the specific requirements of Section 508. Accordingly, beyond aligning with WCAG, we actively incorporate Section 508 standards into our design and development processes. This approach ensures that we are not only adhering to global accessibility principles but also addressing the functional performance criteria and compliance obligations that are especially relevant for our US-based clients.
As part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility, we continually monitor emerging regulations, standards, and best practices. This enables us to stay ahead of compliance requirements while demonstrating our passion for creating inclusive learning experiences for all.
Supporting procurement and compliance
Demonstrating accessibility conformance is often a non-negotiable requirement in procurement processes for the education and government sectors. Learnosity supports this commitment through:
- Targeting WCAG 2.2 AA: Aligning with the latest internationally recognized technical standards referenced by major regulations.
- Continuous Testing and Validation: Maintaining rigorous, ongoing efforts to monitor, test, and improve accessibility.
- Transparency and Collaboration: Partnering with clients and engaging in third-party audits to address specific needs and drive continuous improvement.
By embedding these practices into our development and compliance processes, Learnosity empowers clients to meet their accessibility obligations with confidence—while enabling them to deliver innovative, inclusive, and supportive assessments.
Documenting conformance using our VPAT
A key requirement in many procurement processes is a formal document that outlines a product’s accessibility conformance. The Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) is the internationally recognized standard for this purpose.
Learnosity provides the latest version of its VPAT to help clients evaluate products against accessibility standards. Our VPAT covers the core assessment products, including:
- Assessment player: The environment where students interact with Questions.
- Diverse range of Question types: The building blocks authors use to design and deliver assessments.
- Significant new features: New capabilities added to the assessment experience are developed with accessibility in mind and included within the scope of conformance reporting.
The completed VPAT offers clear, structured information about the accessibility status of the end-learner experience. Clients consistently find this documentation extremely valuable in procurement processes, as it demonstrates both transparency and compliance with accessibility requirements.
Validating conformance
Learnosity employs multiple methods to validate the accessibility conformance of its core products:
- Rigorous internal testing: As part of our overall accessibility process, we combine automated tools, manual testing, and expert reviews throughout the development lifecycle.
- Accessibility usability studies: We conduct dedicated studies with participants who have a range of disabilities, interacting with the Assessment Player and Question types using their preferred assistive technologies. These studies provide valuable qualitative insights into usability, complementing our technical conformance checks.
- Third-party audits: Many clients commission their own independent accessibility audits of Learnosity components. We actively collaborate by reviewing and discussing these findings, treating them as an important source of external validation. This process often uncovers new perspectives and unique use cases, creating a feedback loop that helps us continuously improve our products to meet real-world accessibility needs.
